Picks for 6/15/10
Slovakia ( -1, -125) vs New Zealand - 1 unit
Overall, New Zealand is looked upon by many pundits as the weakest in the tournament. After Australia left the Oceania qualifying group New Zealand was left to fend against weak teams like Fiji for the only spot in that qualifying group. New Zealand, when trying to play against big soccer powerhouse nations such as Australia and Mexico, looked overmatched. They did earn a surprise 1-0 victory over Serbia, but I see that game as a fluke. Now, Slovakia is a little more talented with midfielder Marek Hamsik leading the way, with his talents reportedly being courted by Premier League Teams such as Manchester City. Overall, the Slovakian team is not all that great, but they are still better than a terrible All-Whites team that is clearly overmatched.
Portugal (Win only, +125) vs Ivory Coast - .5 units
In a normal World Cup, Portugal would look like the obvious choice but with the World Cup finally visiting the African continent, many feel that the Ivorian players will play to the maximum of their ability on their home continent. However, I believe Portugal is just too talented for this Ivory Coast squad. Looking at the players for both sides, the Portuguese squad looks to be more talented with a solid defense of Carvalho and Bruno Alves, and a midfield of Deco and Ronaldo. Yes, Portugal did look bumpy in the qualifying but I believe they have smoothed things out and have a very well put together team. Ivory Coast does have the homefield advantage but in the end, Les Elephants will need more than Didier Drogba to score and win this game. Overall, I don't see the Africans having enough firepower to stay with the Portuguese, so I am predicting a 2-1 victory for Portugal.
Brazil ( -2.5, +125) vs North Korea - 1 unit
First, I think we can all agree that Brazil is by far the better team in this matchup. However, the question is, Can Brazil win by 3? I personally believe that they can. Germany showed us an example a couple of days ago, that if a team is good enough and they play a team that is one of the weaker teams in the World Cup, then a strong play on the favorite is a strong move for the game. Brazil's frontline comes in with a ton of power in Robinho, Nilmar, and Louis Fabiano, and that's not even mentioning their star studed midfield. In the end, North Korea is in way over their heads and should be taken care of quite easily.
Brazil (o3,even) vs North Korea - .5 units
For the same reasoning as above, I believe that Brazil will put a thrashing on a less talented North Korean side. I can easily see 4,5, or even 6 being slotted home by Brazil. I see Brazil putting 4 past North Korea in this matchup with Brazil having just too much talent for North Korea to handle.
